Metadata Platform Debugging Database

Video Metadata Debugging Tool

Created a debugging toolkit to troubleshoot errors in massive video metadata files for a streaming platform. The tool reduced problem resolution time from hours to minutes and enabled any engineer to solve issues that previously required specialized expertise.

Key Results

  • Reduced troubleshooting time from 2-3 hours to under 10 minutes
  • Enabled any support engineer to resolve issues that previously required specialists
  • Dramatically improved response times to the client

The Challenge

A major cable TV provider was sending daily metadata files—each over 100MB—to populate a streaming video platform with information about shows and movies. These files were enormous and complex, and when something went wrong, engineers had to manually search through millions of lines of data to find the problem. By the time they found the issue, the next day's file had already arrived, potentially carrying the same error forward.

What I Built

A specialized debugging tool that creates a direct connection between the video platform's database and the original metadata files. When an engineer sees incorrect data in the system, they can use the tool to instantly trace it back to the exact location in the source file where the problem originated.

I also created step-by-step guides for the most common types of errors, so any engineer could resolve issues without needing to be an expert in video metadata formats.

Key capabilities

Instant correlation from platform data back to source file location
Automated error pattern detection
Plain-English error explanations
Step-by-step resolution guides for common issues

Results

Reduced troubleshooting time from 2-3 hours to under 10 minutes
Enabled any support engineer to resolve issues that previously required specialists
Dramatically improved response times to the client
Reduced escalations and emergency production fixes
Recognized as a major efficiency win by both support and engineering teams
